Hi, I’m Todd — Proud Bernese Mountain Dog Parent & Founder of Bernese Mountain Lover
I started Bernese Mountain Lover in 2023 after having the chance to have three Bernese Mountain Dogs in my life. I got my first dog Scarlett in 2011, Indy in 2020, and Reba in 2023. What began as a personal obsession — researching everything about the breed, joining BMD communities, and tracking down the best care advice — turned into a mission: create the resource I wish had existed when Scarlett first came home.
Scarlett was a lovable, 100-lb bundle of fluff who ultimately passed due to kidney failure, leaving an empty place in our hearts, and our daily lives. I wish I could change everything about how it went down, but unfortunately we can’t take back time and can’t get our favorite dogs back. If you’ve had and lost a Berner, you know exactly what I mean.

Why This Site Exists
Bernese Mountain Dogs are incredible dogs — but they come with unique needs. They’re prone to specific health conditions, they shed like it’s their job, and they have a lifespan that breaks your heart far too soon. I wanted a place that took the breed seriously, gave real information, and also celebrated how absolutely wonderful Berners are. Nearly everything I’ve learned came the slow way — through living with my own dogs, asking a lot of questions, and cross-checking what I found against reputable veterinary and breed-health sources.
What You’ll Find Here
- Practical care guides — health, nutrition, grooming, training, and everyday life, researched specifically for the Bernese Mountain Dog breed and written from real ownership experience.
- Honest health information — clear explanations of the conditions this breed is prone to, what to watch for, and when something needs a veterinarian.
- Owner-to-owner perspective — the kind of advice that comes from people who’ve actually lived with the breed, including the hard parts.

How we create content
BerneseMountainLover.com combines real Bernese Mountain Dog ownership experience with carefully researched information. Our goal is to be practical, honest, and genuinely useful to other Bernese owners. Where articles cover health, nutrition, or safety, we cite reputable sources and are clear about what is general guidance and what needs a veterinarian’s input. Some articles are drafted or edited with the help of AI tools, but always under human direction: everything is reviewed and shaped against real ownership experience and our sources before it’s published. Our full standards are described in our Editorial Policy, and how we fix mistakes is covered in our Corrections Policy.
A note on health information
The health and care information on this site is educational and written from an owner’s perspective. It is not veterinary advice and is not reviewed by a veterinarian. It should never replace a conversation with your own vet. If you are worried about your dog’s health, please contact a licensed veterinarian, and in an emergency contact an emergency veterinary clinic right away.
A small, optional shop. To help support the site, we keep a small collection of Berner-themed gifts — mugs, shirts, and stickers — in our Etsy store. It’s completely separate from our guides, and buying something is never necessary to use anything on this site.
